CliftonStrengths® is the most widely used strengths test in the world – developed by the US research institute Gallup based on the work of Donald O. Clifton, the "father of strengths psychology". More than 30 million people in over 50 countries have already taken the assessment. This guide explains in plain English what the test is, how it works, what it costs, what the difference is between Top 5 and Top 34 – and how to actually use your results in daily life, leadership and career.
What exactly is CliftonStrengths®?
CliftonStrengths® (formerly: StrengthsFinder 2.0) is a scientifically validated online assessment that reveals your natural talent patterns. The core thesis is simple but radical: you don't become excellent where you keep grinding against your weaknesses – you become excellent where you consistently translate your greatest talents into strengths.
The test measures 34 so-called talent themes – recurring patterns in thinking, feeling and acting. Examples: *Strategic*, *Empathy*, *Achiever*, *Connectedness*, *Activator*, *Analytical*. Your top talents are not "better" than others – they simply show where you create the greatest impact with the least energy.
The scientific foundation is solid: reliability and validity studies are documented in Gallup's Technical Report; meta-analyses with more than 1.8 million employees show that strengths-based teams achieve significantly higher engagement, lower turnover and better performance (Gallup Q12 Meta-Analysis).
How does the test work?
The CliftonStrengths® test is an online questionnaire with 177 paired items. For each pair you decide between two statements that could describe you – with only 20 seconds per pair. That's intentional: time pressure prevents socially desirable answers and captures your intuitive self-image.
Completion takes about 30–45 minutes. You need a quiet environment, a stable internet connection, and you should take the test in one sitting (no breaks built in). You receive your result immediately online as a PDF.
Top 5 or Top 34 – which result do you need?
Gallup offers three result variants:
• Top 5 (USD 25–30): Your five strongest talent themes, short descriptions, entry-level insight.
• Top 34 / full report (USD 60–90): All 34 themes in order including the shadow and weakness patterns at the bottom.
• Upgrade from Top 5 to Top 34: possible any time, you only pay the difference.
Our clear recommendation: anyone who seriously wants to work with the profile – especially for career decisions, leadership development or team work – needs the Top 34 report. Only the order of all 34 themes shows where your blind spots and energy drains sit. More in the guide to the 34 talent themes.
Where do you buy the test?
You get the test directly at the Gallup Strengths Center. Payment by credit card. Avoid third-party providers with "discount codes" – only official Gallup codes guarantee a valid, analysable result.
Alternative for Switzerland: in a strengths coaching at PurposeCoach® you receive the Top 34 code included – plus a professional debrief by a certified Gallup Strengths Coach® (SBC).
The 4 domains – how the 34 themes are grouped
Gallup groups the 34 talent themes into four domains that show *how* you have impact:
• Strategic Thinking (e.g. Analytical, Learner, Intellection, Strategic) – how you process information.
• Executing (e.g. Achiever, Discipline, Focus, Responsibility) – how you bring things into the world.
• Influencing (e.g. Activator, Communication, Competition, Self-Assurance) – how you mobilise others.
• Relationship Building (e.g. Empathy, Connectedness, Harmony, Adaptability) – how you shape relationships.
This distribution is often more meaningful than individual themes. Deeper: The 4 domains of CliftonStrengths® at a glance.
What does CliftonStrengths® really bring in daily life?
1. Clarity about yourself
After the test you understand for the first time, precisely, why some tasks come easily to you and others constantly drain you. This isn't esoteric self-discovery – it's empirically grounded language for patterns you've sensed for years.
2. Better job and career decisions
If you know that your top talents sit in *Strategic Thinking*, but your job is 80% operational routine, that's not a character flaw – it's a fit problem. More: Finding your purpose with CliftonStrengths® and profilingvalues.
3. Stronger leadership
Gallup studies show: leaders who know their own strengths and actively deploy their team's strengths achieve up to 8–18% higher productivity and significantly lower turnover. Deeper: Strengths-based leadership with CliftonStrengths®.
4. Better teamwork
Within teams, a shared strengths profile prevents misunderstandings, because differences are suddenly explainable: someone with "Discipline" at #1 thinks about deadlines differently than someone with "Adaptability" at #1. Both are right – they're just *different*. Practical guide: CliftonStrengths® in team coaching.
Common misconceptions
"My #1 talent is my strength." Wrong. Talent is the *raw material*. Strength only emerges through talent × investment × practice – just like musical ability only becomes performance through training.
"I should ignore my weaknesses." Also wrong. Weaknesses should be managed – through delegation, tools, partners with complementary strengths. Ignoring is risky, especially in leadership roles.
"The test tells me what to become." No. CliftonStrengths® does not deliver a career recommendation. It describes patterns, not goals. Translating into purpose, job setup and next steps is the work of reflection – ideally with a certified coach.
CliftonStrengths® vs. other assessments
• vs. MBTI / 16 Personalities: MBTI sorts people into 16 boxes. CliftonStrengths® works with an individual talent ranking from 34 themes – far more differentiated and open to change.
• vs. DISC: DISC focuses on interaction behaviour (4 styles). CliftonStrengths® goes deeper into *thinking and motivation patterns*.
• vs. Profilingvalues: Profilingvalues measures values and motives – the *what for*. CliftonStrengths® measures talents – the *how*. Combining both is gold; see CliftonStrengths® Leadership Bundle with Profilingvalues.
• vs. Enneagram: The Enneagram describes personality dynamics and shadow. CliftonStrengths® is resource-oriented and empirically validated; the Enneagram is more of a model.
How to use your result – a 4-week plan
Week 1 – read & reflect. Read your Top 34 report calmly, twice. Mark the sentences that surprise you and the ones you immediately recognise.
Week 2 – collect. Keep a "strengths diary": note 3 situations every day in which you were in flow – and which of your top talents were active there.
Week 3 – combine talents. Pick 2 of your Top 5 and ask: what new task could you take on that needs exactly this combination?
Week 4 – manage weak spots. Look at your themes 25–34. Which currently cost you most energy – and which strategy (delegation, tool, partner) could compensate them?
Going through this process structurally with a certified coach gets you to real change far faster. That's where our strengths coachings and online strengths trainings come in.
What does a professional CliftonStrengths® coaching cost?
In Switzerland, certified Strengths Coaches typically charge between CHF 180–280 per hour. A full strengths coaching usually includes:
• Top 34 test code (value approx. CHF 80),
• 4–6 sessions of 60–90 minutes,
• written Top 5 profile with individual recommendations,
• a concrete 90-day action plan.
At PurposeCoach®, Philipp Fuchs (Certified Gallup Strengths Coach® / SBC) delivers the coaching. Non-binding free 30-min consultation for the fit check: /erstgespraech.
FAQ – the most frequent questions
Can I take the test multiple times? Yes, technically – but results change only slightly. Talents are highly stable across the lifespan. Recommendation: take it once, carefully, then work with it.
Is the test suitable for teenagers? Yes, there's a separate CliftonStrengths Explorer® version for students from age 10.
Is the test GDPR-compliant? Gallup is hosted in the US; data is subject to US law. For sensitive enterprise applications, a separate DPA review is worthwhile.
Is there a free version? No official free version exists. Free "strengths tests" online are usually not validated and don't deliver comparable results.
Conclusion
CliftonStrengths® is one of the most evidence-based and most practical strengths assessments worldwide. Anyone who takes the test seriously, debriefs it with a qualified coach and translates the result into real decisions gains lasting clarity about their own way of having impact – professionally and personally.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the CliftonStrengths test cost?+
The Top 5 version costs around USD 25, the full report of all 34 themes about USD 60. In coaching I work with the full version because the lower themes are just as informative.
How long do the results stay valid?+
Talent themes are very stable over time. Retaking the test is rarely necessary; applying it more deeply in your current context is more valuable.
Do I need a coach to interpret the results?+
Not necessarily, but the benefit rises sharply because labels turn into concrete actions. In the free 30-minute consultation we clarify which assessment fits your situation.
