CliftonStrengths® or VIA Character Strengths? Both tests are used by millions of people worldwide, both promise to surface your strengths – and yet they answer two completely different questions. Confusing them leaves you with a result you can't act on. This guide helps you pick the right test for your situation.
The short answer
• CliftonStrengths® shows *how* you work, think and interact best. It is a talent and performance assessment – ideal for career, leadership and teamwork.
• VIA Character Strengths shows *who* you are at your core – your moral character strengths such as courage, gratitude or fairness. It comes out of Positive Psychology and is ideal for meaning, relationships and well-being.
Both tests are scientifically solid. They compete less than people think – they complement each other.
Origin and methodology
CliftonStrengths® (Gallup)
Developed by Don Clifton, the “father of strengths psychology”, and sold by Gallup since 2001. It is based on more than 50 years of research with over two million interviews in companies. The test measures 34 talent themes in four domains: *Strategic Thinking, Relationship Building, Influencing, Executing*. You answer 177 paired statements under time pressure – designed to elicit instinctive rather than socially desirable answers.
More background: Gallup Assessments – CliftonStrengths & Q12.
VIA Character Strengths (VIA Institute)
Developed under the leadership of Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson as a scientific counterpart to the DSM (diagnostics of mental disorders) – essentially a “catalogue of the good in human beings”. It draws on a cross-cultural analysis of philosophical and religious traditions. The test measures 24 character strengths in six virtues: *Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, Justice, Temperance, Transcendence*. You answer roughly 96 statements on a 5-point scale.
What each test measures
| Dimension | CliftonStrengths® | VIA Character Strengths |
|---|
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Talents & performance | Character & virtues |
|---|---|---|
| Themes | 34 | 24 |
| Question | *How* do I work best? | *Who* am I at my core? |
| Research base | Organisational psychology (Gallup) | Positive psychology (Seligman/Peterson) |
| Context | Career, leadership, team | Meaning, relationships, well-being |
| Changeability | Talents are largely stable | Strengths are trainable |
Reporting: what you end up with
CliftonStrengths® delivers either a Top-5 or full 34-theme profile with detailed reports: personal strengths insights, application tips, team and leadership reports. The reporting is concrete and action-oriented – including suggestions on how to bring a strength into projects, meetings or career decisions.
VIA delivers a free ranking of all 24 character strengths. Paid reports (around USD 20–60) go deeper on specific areas like *calling, relationships, resilience*. The reporting is reflective and values-oriented – less “how to be more productive”, more “how to live more meaningfully”.
Cost comparison
• CliftonStrengths® Top 5: approx. CHF 25 – sensible entry point
• CliftonStrengths® All 34: approx. CHF 70 – the full deep dive
• VIA Survey (basic): free
• VIA Premium Reports: approx. USD 20–60 per report
If you want to use strengths professionally at work, CliftonStrengths® All 34 plus a coaching debrief is the best investment. If you want personal reflection, the free VIA test already gets you a long way.

The most common misconceptions
“VIA is free, so it's enough.” For personal reflection, true. For career decisions, VIA lacks the concrete work context – it doesn't tell you which job will make you most productive.
“CliftonStrengths® makes me a better person.” No – it shows *how* you work, not *whether* you are honest, courageous or grateful. That's exactly where VIA is strong.
“The two tests contradict each other.” They don't. An “Achiever” (CliftonStrengths) can also have “Perseverance” (VIA) as a top strength – one is the *how*, the other is the *stance behind it*.
How we use both at PurposeCoach®
In our Purpose Coaching we mainly use CliftonStrengths® All 34 as the talent foundation and combine it with Profilingvalues for the values layer. We recommend VIA to clients who additionally want to work on personal growth, meaning or resilience – often as a free self-reflection between sessions.
The three-layer model of *talents – values – character* yields a far more complete picture than any single assessment can.
Conclusion: which test is right for you?
• Career clarity, leadership, team: CliftonStrengths® (ideally All 34, with a coaching debrief).
• Meaning, values, well-being, personal growth: VIA Character Strengths (start free, optional premium report).
• Maximum depth and implementation: combine both – plus a coach who turns the results into a clear action plan.
If you're unsure which path is right for you, have a short conversation with us. We take 30 minutes, listen and recommend honestly – even if that means you don't need a paid test right now.
