The CliftonStrengths assessment – often called the Gallup test or formerly StrengthsFinder – is one of the world's most widely used tools for making your natural talents visible. Over 30 million people have taken it, including executives, students and entire teams in enterprises and SMEs. As Certified Purpose Coaches®, we have guided clients through preparation, interpretation and application for years. This guide gives you everything you need to know, step by step.

    What is the CliftonStrengths assessment?

The CliftonStrengths assessment is a psychometric online instrument by Gallup that measures 34 recurring talent themes. It was developed by educational psychologist Dr. Donald O. Clifton in the 1990s and is built on the guiding question: *"What if we helped people build on what they are naturally strong at – instead of fixing weaknesses?"*

Unlike classical personality tests (MBTI, DISC), CliftonStrengths does not measure types but talent patterns – recurring ways in which you think, feel and act. With knowledge, practice and experience these patterns can be turned into real strengths.

The 34 CliftonStrengths themes at a glance

The 34 themes are grouped into four domains. Each domain describes a different way of creating value:

    DomainWhat it deliversExample themes
ExecutingGetting things doneAchiever, Discipline, Focus, Responsibility
InfluencingMoving ideas and peopleCommunication, Self-Assurance, Activator, Maximizer
Relationship BuildingHolding teams togetherEmpathy, Harmony, Individualization, Connectedness
Strategic ThinkingSeeing the future and patternsAnalytical, Ideation, Strategic, Learner

Knowing the full All 34 ranking shows not only your top talents but also your blind spots (themes at the bottom). Both are strategically relevant.

    How the assessment works

Step 1: Buy an access code

You buy access directly from Gallup at *gallup.com/cliftonstrengths*. There are three common options:

Top 5 (around USD 24.99): shows your 5 dominant themes. A good entry point for individuals.

All 34 (around USD 59.99): shows the full ranking of all 34 themes. Recommended for leaders, coaches and anyone making career decisions based on it.

Upgrade from Top 5 to All 34: possible later, you only pay the difference.

Many of our coaching packages include the All 34 access.

Step 2: Preparation – how to enter the test optimally

The test measures your spontaneous reaction, not your self-image. Rehearsing answers is not possible – and would be counterproductive. But these conditions clearly improve result quality:

Be rested: not after a long workday, not right after waking up.

Block 60 undisturbed minutes: phone silent, door closed, a drink ready.

Stable internet: the test cannot be paused – dropouts distort results.

Comfortable chair, quiet room: no multitasking, no emails on the side.

Take it in your native language: Gallup offers 20+ languages including English. The nuances between items matter.

    Step 3: The test itself

The test consists of 177 paired statements. For each pair you see two opposing statements (e.g. *"I like to read books"* vs. *"I like to meet people"*) and decide on a 5-point scale which one fits you better – or whether neither really applies.

Important: you only have 20 seconds per item. If time runs out, the item is scored as neutral. This is intentional: the time pressure forces gut decisions – and those reveal real patterns, not socially desirable answers.

Net duration: about 35–45 minutes. Still block a full hour so you do not start under pressure.

    Step 4: Access the results

Immediately after the test you get access to your personal dashboard on gallup.com. There you will find:

Your Signature Themes (Top 5 or All 34 in ranked order).

Personalised Insights reports per theme (several pages per talent).

    Context-specific reports: Manager, Sales, Leadership.

Downloadable PDFs – ideal for coaching sessions.

How to read the 34 themes correctly

The most common mistake after the test: reading the Insights reports once, recognising yourself – then putting the PDF away. For real professional impact you need three steps:

    1. Read patterns, not single talents

Your Top 5 are not a ranking of "better" to "worse", they describe a pattern. Example: someone with Strategic + Analytical + Ideation + Learner + Focus is a natural analyst – but someone with Empathy + Harmony + Individualization + Connectedness + Communication is a natural bridge-builder. Ask: *What kind of person emerges from this combination?*

    2. Check four-domain balance

Look at how your Top 10 is distributed across the four domains. Missing a domain almost entirely? That is not a deficit – but a hint on where you need complementary people in your team. Leaders with a very one-sided profile (e.g. only Executing) tend to assemble teams in their own image. Full breakdown of all 34 themes by domain: The 4 CliftonStrengths Domains explained.

    3. Look at blind spots honestly

In the All 34 report, the bottom five themes matter as much as the top ones. They are not weaknesses in a moral sense – but they cost you disproportionate energy when your role constantly demands them. Example: with Harmony ranked 34th, you will quickly burn out as a conflict moderator. The fix is rarely to change – but to reshape the role or bring in complementary colleagues.

    Using CliftonStrengths at work

The assessment is a diagnosis, not a prescription. From our practice, the following four use cases deliver the biggest ROI.

    Career reorientation

Anyone considering a job or industry change gains a stable compass with CliftonStrengths: which demands of the new role fit your dominant talents? Which would drain you long-term?

    Leadership and team development

Leaders certified in CliftonStrengths lead in a strengths-based way: they know the top themes of their direct reports and shape task allocation, feedback and development paths accordingly. Gallup studies show that strengths-based teams are measurably more productive, engaged and less absent.

    Recruiting and onboarding

In recruiting, CliftonStrengths is not a selection tool (Gallup explicitly advises against filtering candidates by it) – but it is a strong onboarding tool: new hires and their leader discuss the Top 5, shape the first 90 days accordingly and accelerate ramp-up.

    Personal development

For individuals the test is a good entry point into the question: *"What was I built for?"* – the starting point for purpose work.

    Limits of the CliftonStrengths assessment

As useful as the tool is – it cannot and does not want to measure everything. Important limits, honestly named:

No measurement of values: what matters to you (family, autonomy, security) is not shown. We complement it with Profilingvalues.

No measurement of skills: talent ≠ skill. Having Ideation does not automatically make you a good innovation consultant – it takes practice and knowledge.

Not a diagnosis: the assessment is not a clinical instrument. In severe career crises or burnout, it is no substitute for therapeutic support.

Impact happens in application: without reflection and follow-through the PDF stays a nice document. That is exactly why we always combine it with structure, exercises and follow-up.
