CliftonStrengths® or Enneagram? Both instruments are used by millions worldwide, both promise self-knowledge – and both answer completely different questions. Confuse them and you end up holding a result that is interesting but doesn't move your actual decision forward. This comparison helps you choose the assessment that fits your goal.
The short answer first
• CliftonStrengths® (Gallup) is a talent and performance tool. It shows *how* you work, think and collaborate best – ideal for career decisions, leadership and team development.
• The Enneagram is a personality and motivation model. It shows *why* you act the way you do – your core motives, fears and stress patterns. Ideal for self-reflection, relationship dynamics and personal growth.
If you want to make a professional decision, start with CliftonStrengths®. If you want to understand why you keep blocking yourself, start with the Enneagram.
Origins and method compared
CliftonStrengths® (Gallup)
Developed by Don Clifton, the founder of strengths psychology, and distributed by Gallup since 2001. The test measures 34 talent themes across four domains: *strategic thinking, relationship building, influencing, executing*. You answer 177 paired statements under time pressure – designed to force instinctive rather than socially desirable answers. Gallup publishes technical reports on reliability and validity.

The Enneagram
The Enneagram describes nine personality types that differ not by behaviour but by core motives and basic fears. Its modern form emerged from the 1970s onward (among others Oscar Ichazo, Claudio Naranjo, later Riso & Hudson with the RHETI® questionnaire). It is a typological, development-oriented model: extended by wings, levels of development and stress and growth directions, it describes dynamics – not just a state.

Head-to-head: what each instrument delivers
| Dimension | CliftonStrengths® | Enneagram |
|---|
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Talents & performance | Motives & personality dynamics |
|---|---|---|
| Guiding question | *How* do I work best? | *Why* do I act this way? |
| Structure | 34 talent themes, individual ranking | 9 types + wings & growth directions |
| Research base | Organisational psychology, documented psychometrics | Typological model, inconsistent empirical base |
| Result format | Rank order (no boxed type) | Type assignment with development paths |
| Strength | Application in daily work | Self-knowledge, patterns & stress behaviour |
| Cost | approx. CHF 25 (Top 5) / CHF 70 (All 34) | free up to approx. USD 60 (full RHETI®) |
| Team use | Roles, complementary strengths, performance | Conflict dynamics, communication, stress |
| Fit for selection processes | limited (development, not selection) | not suitable |
Accuracy: how reliable are the results?
CliftonStrengths® delivers an individual rank order instead of a type label – which reduces the risk of putting people in boxes. Results are relatively stable over time, and Gallup documents its psychometric quality publicly. Limitation: the test measures talent, not competence. A top talent without practice remains potential.
The Enneagram is powerful as an explanatory model, but type identification is error-prone – people under stress or living in a highly adapted way often land on their “aspirational type” instead of their own. So a questionnaire is a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis. This is exactly where it is decided whether the Enneagram becomes useful or mere entertainment.

Cost and effort
• CliftonStrengths® Top 5: approx. CHF 25, about 30 minutes of test time – a good entry point.
• CliftonStrengths® All 34: approx. CHF 70 – the full in-depth analysis, recommended for career and leadership questions.
• Enneagram short tests: free, 10–20 minutes – e.g. our self-test with 27 questions.
• RHETI® (Enneagram Institute): approx. USD 12 (short version) up to approx. USD 60 (full version, 144 statement pairs).
In both cases the bigger cost factor is not the test but the debrief. A report that is never translated into decisions rarely changes anything.
Value in teams
CliftonStrengths® in teams creates a shared language for roles and collaboration: who brings analysis, who brings pace, who tends relationships? Team grids make overlaps and blind spots visible – ideal for role clarity, onboarding and performance conversations. More on this: Gallup Strengths in leadership team coaching and strengths-based team leadership.
The Enneagram in teams works above all where friction shows up: it explains why the same statement energises one person and triggers defensiveness in another, and it makes stress behaviour more predictable. Key rule: no type labelling, no use in selection processes. As soon as a type becomes an attribution (“typical Three”), the benefit flips into its opposite.
Decision guide: what fits your question?
Choose CliftonStrengths® if you …
• want to make a career or job decision,
• want to sharpen your role at work or need an orientation checkpoint,
• as a leader want to distribute roles and strengths more deliberately,
• are looking for actionable recommendations instead of self-interpretation.
Choose the Enneagram if you …
• want to understand why you block yourself,
• want to resolve recurring conflict or stress patterns,
• are working on relationships, communication and inner stance,
• want to start free and low-threshold.
Combine both if …
… your talents are clear but you don't access them. This is the most common case in our coaching practice: the talent is there, yet a core motive – perfectionism or fear of rejection, say – holds it back. CliftonStrengths® then shows the potential, the Enneagram the brake.
How we work with this at PurposeCoach®
In purpose coaching we use CliftonStrengths® All 34 as the talent foundation and add, depending on the question, ProfilingValues for the values level and the Enneagram for motives and patterns. The assessments page gives an overview of every instrument we use.
The interplay of talents – values – motives produces a far more complete picture than any single instrument – and, more importantly, a concrete next step.
Conclusion
• Professional clarity, leadership, teams: CliftonStrengths® (ideally All 34 with a coaching debrief).
• Self-knowledge, patterns, relationships: the Enneagram – start for free, validate in conversation.
• Maximum impact: combine both, with a debrief that turns them into an action plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between CliftonStrengths® and the Enneagram?+
CliftonStrengths® is a talent and performance assessment: it shows how you work, think and interact most productively. The Enneagram is a motivation and personality model: it describes why you act the way you do – your core motives, fears and stress patterns. In short: CliftonStrengths® answers the how, the Enneagram the why.
Which assessment has the stronger scientific backing?+
CliftonStrengths® is far better documented psychometrically (Gallup publishes technical reports on reliability and validity). The Enneagram is a typological model with a less consistent empirical base; individual questionnaires such as the RHETI® have been studied, but the model as a whole remains more interpretive. For personnel decisions, CliftonStrengths® (or a validated instrument such as ProfilingValues) is therefore the more defensible choice.
What do the two tests cost?+
CliftonStrengths® Top 5 costs around CHF 25, the full All 34 analysis around CHF 70 (Gallup pricing 2026). For the Enneagram there are free short tests; the official RHETI® from the Enneagram Institute costs roughly USD 12 for the short version and about USD 60 for the full version. We also offer a free 27-question Enneagram self-test.
Can I combine both assessments?+
Yes – in coaching that is the norm. CliftonStrengths® delivers the talent foundation, the Enneagram explains drivers and stress behaviour. The combination is especially valuable when talents exist but are not being used: the cause usually sits at the motive level, not the talent level.
Which assessment works better for teams?+
For role allocation, complementary strengths and performance conversations, CliftonStrengths® has a clear advantage because it provides a shared, action-oriented language. In teams the Enneagram mainly helps with conflict dynamics, communication patterns and stress behaviour – but never as a label and never in selection processes.
