Finding Your Calling: The Complete Guide (with every «How do I find…?» question)

Cover image for the article: Finding Your Calling: The Complete Guide (with every «How do I find…?» question) (Calling)

Finding your calling is one of the most common – and hardest – life questions in adulthood. In the DACH region alone, more than 1,000 people actively search for it every month. This guide bundles all the key answers: what calling really is, how to recognise it, which tests and coaching methods help – and which typical thinking errors block you.

    What does «calling» actually mean?

A calling is more than a job you enjoy. It is the point where three things intersect:

    • What you are good at (strengths & talents)

    • What drives you from within (values & meaning)

    • What the world needs and rewards (market relevance)

Only when these three circles overlap can we speak of a calling. A hobby is *not* automatically a calling – and neither is a well-paid job.

Calling vs. profession vs. job – the key distinction

    ProfessionCompetence & careermid-term

Most people move between these three modes during their lives. Those who search for a calling are usually in a transition phase – most often between 30 and 50 years old.

How do I find my calling?

A calling cannot be «invented» – only discovered. In practice, these five steps lead there most reliably:

    1. Clarify your strengths with a validated test (e.g. CliftonStrengths®)

    2. Prioritise your values – what may *never* be missing from your life?

    3. Observe your energy patterns – when do you lose track of time?

    4. Check market reality – what are people willing to pay for?

    5. Test hypotheses – try things in small experiments, don't only think

Most people who walk all five steps alone get stuck at steps 3 and 5. This is where calling coaching comes in: a neutral sparring partner reflects your blind spots.

How do I find out which career fits me?

The most common mistake: people start with *«Which job?»* – instead of *«Which strengths?»*. That leads to symptom-level solutions. Better:

    • Start with a strengths assessment (CliftonStrengths®, around CHF 25 for the Top 5)

    • Add a values assessment like profilingvalues

    • Translate the results into 3–5 career fields, not into a single job title

How do I find the right career for me?

«Right» is subjective – but there are three objective indicators you can use:

    • Energy: The work gives you energy instead of only taking it.

    • Growth: You learn out of your own motivation.

    • Meaning: You would do the work even if no one was watching.

If two of these three are missing, you are in a *suitable* – but not the *right* career.

How do I find a job that fits me – and is fun?

Fun does not come from the job itself, but from the ratio between strength and demand. Anyone who can use a strength 80% of the day finds even administrative work satisfying. Anyone who works against their talents 80% of the day feels empty even in a «dream job».

More on this: Recognising and using strengths.

How do I figure out what I want to do professionally?

If you ask this question, you usually lack one of two things: self-knowledge or market knowledge. A practical approach:

    • Briefly interview 10 working people in your network («What do you like most / least about your work?»)

    • For one week, write down daily: *What gave me energy today?*

    • Compare the result with your Top-5 strengths

This exercise creates more clarity in 7 days than 7 months of brooding.

How do I find my dream job?

Be careful with the word «dream job» – it suggests there is *one* perfect job. Realistically, there are 3–5 possible dream jobs that all match your strengths and values. A good calling coach helps you carve out and prioritise these 3–5 options.

How do I find a fitting career – with or without a test?

Tests are tools, not truths. They deliver hypotheses you need to test in real life. Recommendation:

    • With a test: CliftonStrengths® + profilingvalues for a 360° picture

    • Without a test: CV reflection + values exercise + coaching conversation

Free online tests («Which job fits me?») are fine as a starting point but do not replace serious analysis.

How do I find the perfect career for me?

The perfect career does not exist. There is only the coherent one – one in which you:

    • can use your strengths more than 70% of the time,

    • work with people whose values you share,

    • earn an income that carries your life.

Those who wait for perfection stay stuck. Those who aim for coherence move forward.

Life purpose vs. calling – are they the same?

Not quite. The life purpose is the overarching question *«What am I here for?»*. The calling is its professional translation. You can live your life purpose in several callings – as a parent, as a coach, as a mentor, as an entrepreneur.

What if you can't find your calling?

    Three reasons are most common:

    • Expectations too high: You search for *the one* revelation – instead of 3–5 coherent options.

    • Too little data: You brood instead of experimenting.

    • Inner blocks: Beliefs («You can't make a living from that»), loyalties or fears.

On point 3, no test will help anymore – only professional coaching that makes unconscious patterns visible. That is exactly the core of strengths and calling coaching at PurposeCoach®.

When does calling coaching make sense?

    • You face a career transition (resignation, re-entry, retirement)

    • You feel successful – but empty

    • You have been going in circles around the same questions for months

    • You have done tests but can't get into action

In all of these cases, a structured coaching process saves months of time – and sometimes a wrong decision worth tens of thousands of francs.
