Gallup CliftonStrengths vs. High5 Test: Which Strengths Test Is Really Worth It?

Gallup CliftonStrengths® or High5 Test? At first glance both tests answer the same question – *“What are my top strengths?”* – and yet they are not interchangeable. One is the industry-standard tool for professional strengths development, the other a free entry point for personal growth. This comparison helps you pick the right test for your situation.
The short answer up front
• CliftonStrengths® (Gallup) is the most scientifically validated strengths assessment on the market – ideal for career, leadership, team and recruiting decisions.
• High5 Test is a free online tool that borrows Gallup's language but is methodologically and in report depth clearly below it – useful as a first contact with the strengths mindset.
Both have their place. Confusing them means investing in the wrong test or making decisions on too thin a data basis.
Origin and methodology
CliftonStrengths® (Gallup)
Developed by Don Clifton, the “father of strengths psychology”, and distributed by Gallup since 2001. Over 50 years of research, more than 30 million respondents worldwide and a technical validation report that is continuously updated. You answer 177 paired statements under time pressure – designed to force instinctive, not “socially desirable” answers. The result is 34 talent themes across four domains: *Strategic Thinking, Relationship Building, Influencing, Executing*.

High5 Test (high5test.com)
An online tool launched in 2014 that aims to make the strengths idea low-threshold and accessible. You answer around 100 statements on a scale (without forced choice under time pressure). The result is 20 strengths, of which the top 5 are shown. The High5 strengths are not identical to the 34 Gallup themes, even when some labels sound similar (e.g. *Achiever*, *Strategist*). High5 does not publish a comparably detailed technical validation report like Gallup does.
What each test actually measures
| Dimension | CliftonStrengths® (Gallup) | High5 Test |
|---|
|---|---|---|
| Number of themes | 34 (Top 5 or All 34) | 20 (Top 5) |
|---|---|---|
| Question format | 177 paired statements, time pressure | ~100 statements, Likert scale |
| Research base | 50+ years, 30M respondents | younger online tool, less published validation |
| Report depth | Very detailed, with application & team reports | Brief, descriptive |
| Cost | CHF ~25 (Top 5) – CHF ~70 (All 34) | Free basic version, paid reports |
| Use case | Career, leadership, recruiting, team | Personal reflection, first entry |
| Coach ecosystem | 12,000+ certified Gallup coaches worldwide | No comparable certification network |
Report depth: what you actually hold in your hand
CliftonStrengths®** delivers a detailed, **action-oriented report: an in-depth description per talent theme, *“how to apply”* notes, leadership prompts, hints on possible “shadow sides” of each strength and – with All 34 – the complete order of all 34 themes. This is the data basis we use in coaching to derive concrete career, leadership and team decisions.
High5 delivers a brief description of your top 5 plus paid deep-dive PDFs. For an initial self-reflection that is often enough. For professional positioning, recruiting or team development the information density is usually too low.
Cost in direct comparison
• High5 Test: free basic version, paid premium reports.
• CliftonStrengths® Top 5: approx. CHF 25 – sensible entry point.
• CliftonStrengths® All 34: approx. CHF 70 – full depth analysis, standard for coaching.
Anyone who wants to work professionally with the results is best served by CliftonStrengths® All 34 plus a coaching debrief. Anyone who only wants to “dip a toe in” is well served by the free High5 test – but should know the results are not 1:1 comparable to Gallup.
Professional vs. personal development
The most honest framing runs along this line:
Pick CliftonStrengths® for *professional development* if you …
• want to make a career or professional decision,
• want to deploy your team more deliberately as a leader,
• need a professional positioning review,
• are setting up a recruiting or team development project,
• want to work on your strengths profile with a certified coach.

Pick the High5 Test for *personal development* if you …
• are encountering the strengths mindset for the first time,
• have no budget for a paid assessment,
• are looking for a free reflection exercise for yourself or a team,
• do not need the results for load-bearing professional decisions.

The most common misunderstandings
“High5 is a free version of Gallup.” No. High5 is an independent tool with its own item structure and its own strengths list. Results cannot be directly translated.
“If strengths have similar names in both tests, they measure the same thing.” Careful. *Achiever* in High5 and *Achiever* in Gallup are similar, but not identically defined – statements, scales and reference samples differ.
“A free test is enough for a career decision.” For a first orientation yes. For a decision with multi-year impact (job change, self-employment, leadership role) the data basis is too thin – stepping up to CliftonStrengths® All 34 almost always pays off.
How we work with this at PurposeCoach®
In our 1:1 Strengths Coaching and in the Strengths Masterclass we consistently work with CliftonStrengths® All 34, because only the full 34 themes honestly answer the question *“Where are my blind spots?”*. For values we add Profilingvalues; for character and meaning we recommend VIA Character Strengths.
We occasionally recommend the High5 Test to people who are still unsure whether they want to go in the direction of strengths work at all – as a free entry exercise before they invest in a professional assessment.
Bottom line: which test fits you?
• Professional clarity, leadership, team, recruiting: CliftonStrengths® All 34, ideally with a coaching debrief.
• First contact, personal reflection, no budget: High5 Test as a free entry point.
• Maximum depth: Start with CliftonStrengths® All 34 and, depending on the question, add Profilingvalues or VIA.
If you're unsure whether CliftonStrengths® really is worth it in your situation, talk to us briefly. We take 30 minutes, listen and recommend honestly – even if that means a free test is enough for you right now.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between Gallup CliftonStrengths and the High5 Test?+
CliftonStrengths® is a paid, scientifically validated assessment with 34 talent themes, 177 forced-choice items under time pressure and an in-depth report. The High5 Test is a free online tool with around 100 scale items and 20 strengths, of which the top 5 are shown, without a comparable technical validation report.
Is the High5 Test credible?+
As a low-threshold first contact with the strengths mindset, the High5 Test is useful. For decisions with long-term impact such as a job change, a leadership role or self-employment, the data basis is too thin because High5 publishes no comparable validation.
Can I translate High5 results into Gallup themes?+
No. High5 uses its own item structure and its own strengths list. Even when labels such as Achiever sound similar, they are defined differently and cannot be mapped directly.
Which test is worth it for professional decisions?+
For career, leadership and team decisions we recommend CliftonStrengths® All 34 with a coaching debrief, because only the full 34 themes also reveal your blind spots.
