“Why pay for a strengths test when free alternatives exist?” It's one of the most common questions in our discovery calls. The honest answer: it depends on what you plan to do with the result.

This comparison shows what free strengths tests deliver – and where Gallup CliftonStrengths® makes a measurable difference.

What free strengths tests actually deliver

Free tools such as High5, VIA Character Strengths or the many 16-type quizzes are a decent entry point. They give you a first vocabulary for self-reflection and cost you nothing but time.

Their limits appear as soon as things get concrete:

Lower resolution: 5 to 24 categories instead of 34 differentiated talent themes.

No full ranking: blind spots (the lower ranks) stay invisible.

Varying validation: VIA is scientifically solid; many free tools have no published validation at all.

No debriefing: a PDF without a conversation rarely changes behaviour.

CliftonStrengths® vs. free alternatives: the comparison table

The five criteria that decide the practical value – cost, accuracy, methodology, results and coaching use:

    CriterionGallup CliftonStrengths®Free alternatives (High5, VIA, 16-type tests)
CostPaid: Top 5 from approx. CHF 25, All 34 from approx. CHF 65 (debriefing separate)CHF 0 – sometimes with a paid premium/upgrade report
AccuracyHigh test-retest stability, published validation studies, millions of recordsHighly variable: VIA is solidly validated, many free tools publish no psychometrics at all
MethodologyIpsative forced-choice format, 177 item pairs, individual ranking across 34 talent themesMostly Likert scales with 20–60 items, 5–24 categories, type logic instead of ranking
ResultsTop 5 or All 34 report with full ranking, blind spots, domain balance and action promptsShort PDF or web result with category labels, rarely prioritised, no lower ranks
Coaching useStandard with certified coaches: structured debriefing, team and leadership application, development planUsable as a conversation starter, no established debriefing format, little team follow-up

Bottom line: free tests win on cost, CliftonStrengths® wins on accuracy, methodology, depth of results and coaching follow-through.

Pros and cons at a glance

    Gallup CliftonStrengths®

Pros: full ranking across all 34 talent themes, published psychometric data, visible blind spots, established debriefing and team format, robust enough for role and career decisions.

Cons: paid (Top 5 from approx. CHF 25, All 34 from approx. CHF 65), debriefing charged separately, the report often stays unused without a debrief, takes roughly 30–45 minutes.

Free alternatives (High5, VIA, 16-type tests)

Pros: CHF 0, done in 10–20 minutes, a good entry into strengths language, VIA is scientifically solid, ideal as an impulse before a first conversation.

Cons: low resolution (5–24 categories), no ranking and no lower ranks, many tools have no published validation, no debriefing, often "paid for" with a newsletter sign-up or data sharing.

Recommendation in one sentence: A free test is enough to explore the topic – as soon as a real decision depends on your strengths, CliftonStrengths® All 34 plus a debriefing is the investment you only make once.

When a free test is enough

A free test is fine if you:

    1. are thinking about strengths for the first time,

    2. have no career decision riding on the outcome,

    3. read the result as an impulse, not a diagnosis.

    When CliftonStrengths® pays off

When a real decision is on the table – a role change, a leadership step, reorientation, team design – precision matters. That's where the combination of the All 34 report and a structured debriefing turns “interesting” into “actionable”.

In our strengths coaching with CliftonStrengths® All 34 we work with the full ranking by default, because only it answers the question: *where are my talents – and where do I need systems or partners?*

If you prefer working in a group, the Strengths Breakthrough Training as an online group programme is the more affordable entry into the same methodology; see online courses and group programmes for all formats.

What that looks like in practice is shown in our anonymised client success stories – starting point, approach and outcome for each case.

    Our recommendation: combine wisely

Entry: a free test or our Purpose Kompass workbook (free).

Depth: CliftonStrengths® All 34 with debriefing in 1:1 coaching.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Are free strengths tests worthless?+

No. For a first impulse they are genuinely useful. For career decisions they lack resolution, validated data and a debriefing conversation.

    Top 5 or All 34 for CliftonStrengths®?+

Top 5 shows your dominant talents. All 34 adds the complete ranking including blind spots, which is far more useful in coaching.

    Can I combine both?+

Yes. Many people start with a free test or our Purpose Kompass and then invest in CliftonStrengths® All 34 with a debriefing session.

How accurate are free strengths tests?+

The range is wide. VIA Character Strengths is scientifically published and methodologically sound. Many other free tools publish neither reliability nor validity data, and their results can shift noticeably when you retake them a few weeks later. CliftonStrengths® documents test-retest stability and construct validity in Gallup's technical reports.

How can I tell whether a free test is valid?+

Check three things: is there a technical manual or publication with reliability and validity figures? Is the norm sample (size, origin) disclosed? And is it explained how the scales are derived? If all of that is missing, the result is a reflection prompt, not a measurement.

Can I base career decisions on a free test result?+

As a hypothesis yes, as a decision basis no. For role changes, leadership steps or reorientation we recommend a validated instrument, because that is where ranking, blind spots and domain balance become visible. Free type tests are not suitable for hiring decisions at all.

Why do two free tests give me different results?+

Because different models measure different things: character strengths, talent patterns and personality types are not the same construct level. On top of that, daily state, response format (Likert vs. forced choice) and item count all shape the outcome. The patterns that stay stable across tests are the meaningful part.

How do I use a free test well in coaching?+

Treat the result as a conversation starter: pick two themes you recognise and write down one concrete situation from the last four weeks for each. Those examples are the starting point in the free 30-minute consultation and quickly show whether a full All 34 report is needed.
