Am I in the Wrong Job? 12 Signs, a Self-Test and What You Can Do Now

Cover image for the article: Am I in the Wrong Job? 12 Signs, a Self-Test and What You Can Do Now (Career)

«I don't know if my job is still the right one – but I also don't know if it's just a phase.» That's how every second first conversation in my coaching practice begins. This article gives you two tools to answer it for yourself: 12 concrete signs and a 10-question self-test.

Why the question is so hard to answer honestly

We usually overlay the question «Does this job still fit me?» with other topics – salary, security, external expectations, sunk-cost thinking («I've already invested so much»). Clarity only emerges when you isolate the pure question: Does this job put my strengths and values to use – or am I fighting against it every day?

The 12 signs you're in the wrong job

Not every single sign is an alarm signal. But if you recognise yourself in 4 or more, a structured career assessment is worthwhile.

    1. Sunday dread. From Sunday afternoon your stomach tightens – not because of a single task but because of «the week».

    2. Energy emptiness despite a normal workload. You're exhausted, although objectively no more hours are added than before.

    3. Cynicism. You inwardly mock colleagues, leadership or clients – a classic early sign of a values breach.

    4. Fantasies of leaving. You read job ads «just for fun», look for sabbatical models or calculate how long your savings would last.

    5. No more anticipation for projects. Even new, exciting tasks trigger nothing.

    6. Body signals. Persistent tension, sleep problems, susceptibility to infection – without another identifiable cause.

    7. You no longer enjoy explaining your job. In small talk you change the topic.

    8. No more growth. You're not really learning anything new; training becomes a chore.

    9. Constant comparisons. You watch what others your age are doing – and feel left behind or out of place.

    10. The meaning question. «Why am I actually doing this?» comes up regularly, without a solid answer.

    11. Strengths remain unused. The things you're truly good at rarely appear in your daily work.

    12. You long for Monday – just not in this job. You can get excited about other topics, just not about your role.

    The 10-question self-test

Answer each question with Yes (1 point) or No (0 points). Be honest – this test is only for you.

    1. Have I seriously considered resigning more than once in the last 3 months?

    2. If I won the lottery tomorrow, would I quit this job within 4 weeks?

    3. After a normal work week, do I regularly feel drained rather than pleasantly tired?

    4. Do I know my top strengths – and are they *not* systematically used in my current role?

    5. Do central values of mine clash with the culture or leadership at the company?

    6. Have I learned little or nothing really new in the last 12 months?

    7. Do I rarely or never experience flow in this role?

    8. Do I avoid conversations with friends about my job?

    9. Am I afraid I'll still be sitting in exactly this seat in 5 years?

    10. Do I feel my contribution has no real significance overall?

    Scoring:

0–2 points: Probably a phase. Short-term reflection or role adjustment is enough.

3–5 points: Grey zone. A structured career assessment brings clarity.

6–10 points: Clear signal that role, context or both no longer fit. Acting is worth it – structured, not impulsively.

What you can do now – in 3 steps

Step 1: Diagnosis before reaction. Before you resign or move into a similar job: clarify whether the problem lies in the role, in the context (team, leadership, culture) or in the fit (strengths, values). Only the last case requires a real reinvention.

Step 2: Clarity on strengths and values. With CliftonStrengths® and ProfilingValues you get a solid picture in ~2 weeks against which you can mirror your current job.

Step 3: Develop 3–5 realistic options. Not a single dream role but a portfolio: change internally, switch externally, move laterally, test self-employment. Read on: Career change at 40.

    When coaching makes sense

If you score between 3 and 10 and have been circling the same thoughts for more than 3 months, coaching is the fastest path to clarity. A structured process like our career reinvention coaching combines assessments, purpose work and implementation planning – often shortening the typical 12-month search phase to 3–4 months.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know I'm really in the wrong job and not just going through a phase?+

As a rough rule: if you experience at least 4 of the 12 signs (Sunday dread, energy emptiness, unused strengths, values breach) for more than 3 months and the 10-question self-test yields 3+ points, it's very likely more than a phase.

Should I resign if I'm unhappy at work?+

In most cases no – at least not immediately. First clarify whether the problem lies in the role, the context or the fundamental strengths/values fit. Only the last case requires real reinvention. Resignations without a clear target image often extend the transition phase by 6–12 months.

Which test helps me find out if my job still fits?+

For a quick first assessment, the 10-question self-test in this article is suitable. For a solid picture, CliftonStrengths® 34 (strengths profile) and ProfilingValues (values profile) are the most meaningful instruments – both scientifically validated.

How quickly does coaching help me find out whether my job still fits?+

In a structured coaching process with assessments and purpose work, a solid career assessment is typically available after 4–8 weeks. The full reinvention including implementation takes 3–6 months.
