Strengths Breakthrough Coaching (SBC): Why It Works and How You Benefit

Most people spend their lives repairing weaknesses – instead of leveraging their strengths. Strengths coaching reverses this approach: It's based on the insight that sustainable success emerges where natural talent meets targeted development. But what exactly is strengths coaching, how does it work, and why is it so effective?
What Is SBC?
Strengths coaching is a scientifically founded coaching approach based on the Gallup CliftonStrengths Assessment. Instead of analyzing deficits, the assessment identifies your top talents – the natural thinking, feeling, and behavioral patterns that make you unique.
The assessment measures 34 talent themes that Gallup has identified over decades of studies with millions of people. Your personal profile shows you not only what you're good at – but also *why* you do certain things the way you do.
Important: A talent alone is not yet a strength. Only when you combine your talent with knowledge and practice does a true strength emerge. This is exactly where coaching comes in.
The Science Behind the Approach
Positive Psychology – founded by Martin Seligman – forms the theoretical foundation. Instead of asking 'What's wrong with you?' it asks: 'What's *right* with you – and how can you use more of it?'
The research results are clear:
• People who use their strengths daily are 6x more engaged at work (Gallup, 2023).
• Teams with a strengths focus are 12.5% more productive than deficit-oriented teams.
• Those who know their strengths report 3x higher quality of life.
• Strengths-based development leads to 8–18% performance improvement in companies.
These aren't theoretical values – they're based on Gallup studies with over 25 million participants worldwide.
How Does SBC Work?
At PurposeCoach®, we work with a proven process:
1. The Assessment
You complete the CliftonStrengths Assessment online – either the Top 5 or the complete 34-theme profile. In about 40 minutes, you answer questions that capture your natural reaction patterns. Order your assessment directly via our assessments page.
2. The Analysis
In the coaching session, we analyze your profile together. It's not just about naming your talents – but understanding them in your context:
• How do your talents show up in everyday life?
• In which situations are you in your element?
• Where do you unconsciously sabotage yourself because you're working against your nature?
3. The Strategy
Together, we develop concrete strategies for how you can deliberately leverage your strengths – professionally and personally. This might mean:
• Redesigning tasks to match your talents.
• Aligning communication and collaboration with your strengths.
• Not ignoring weaknesses, but managing them intelligently.
4. The Integration
Recognizing strengths is the first step. Living them daily is the decisive one. That's why we accompany you over a period during which you consciously integrate your strengths into everyday life – with regular reflections and adjustments.
Who Is SBC Suitable For?
Strengths coaching is not a niche offering – it's universally applicable:
For individuals: You're seeking more clarity about your talents, want to make career decisions more confidently, or sense that you 'could do more' but don't know how.
For leaders: You want to lead with a strengths orientation, better understand your team, and deploy each employee where they can have the most impact. Learn more about our leadership coaching.
For teams: You want to understand which talents exist in the team, how to resolve conflicts through different strengths, and how to optimize your collaboration.
For people in transition: You're facing a change – job switch, reorientation, retirement – and want to know what you can build on.
The Difference from Traditional Coaching
Traditional coaching is often process-oriented: It asks questions, guides reflection, and helps with goal-finding. That's valuable – but it often lacks an objective foundation.
Strengths coaching combines this process with a scientifically validated assessment. This means:
• You don't start from zero but with concrete data about your talents.
• The coach can work more precisely because the starting point is clear.
• Progress is measurable because you know which strengths you want to develop.
• Results are sustainable because they build on your natural disposition.
Common Misconceptions
'I already know my strengths.' – Most people confuse competencies (what they've learned) with talents (what comes naturally to them). The assessment often reveals talents you weren't even aware of.
'Strengths focus means ignoring weaknesses.' – On the contrary. Strengths coaching helps you realistically assess weaknesses and develop strategies so they don't hold you back – e.g., through partnerships with people whose strengths compensate for your weaknesses.
'That's only for managers.' – Strengths coaching works for students just as well as for CEOs. Because every person has talents – regardless of position or industry.
What Clients Say
After strengths coaching, our clients regularly report:
• More self-confidence – because they finally understand what makes them unique.
• Better decisions – because they know what suits them and what doesn't.
• More energy – because they stop working against their nature.
• Stronger relationships – because they learn to appreciate others' strengths.
• Clearer direction – because their strengths act like a compass.
