Every person is unique – and that's exactly what makes us strong. But do you truly know where your greatest talents lie? The CliftonStrengths® assessment by Gallup, formerly known as StrengthsFinder, is one of the world's most widely used instruments for identifying individual strengths. Over 30 million people have completed it. In this comprehensive guide, we present all 34 talent themes in detail – and show you how to leverage these insights in coaching.
The assessment is based on the groundbreaking research of Donald O. Clifton, the "Father of Strengths Psychology." His core question wasn't "What's wrong with people?" but rather: "What happens when we focus on what's right?" This simple reversal has changed how millions of people think about leadership, teamwork, and personal development.
The Four Domains of CliftonStrengths®
The 34 talent themes are grouped into four domains that describe how people contribute (domain-by-domain deep dive: The 4 CliftonStrengths Domains explained):
• Executing: People with strong Executing themes know how to get things done. They turn ideas into action and work tirelessly toward achieving goals.
• Influencing: These themes describe people who persuade, motivate, and take charge. They ensure the team's voice is heard.
• Relationship Building: People with these themes are the glue that holds teams together. They build strong relationships and foster collaboration.
• Strategic Thinking: These themes describe people who absorb information, analyze it, and enable better decisions. They keep the team focused on what *could be*.
---
Domain 1: Executing
These nine talent themes drive execution. People with strong Executing themes are the "doers" – they transform visions into tangible results.
1. Achiever®
People with the Achiever talent have a relentless inner drive. Every day starts at zero – they need the feeling of having accomplished something to consider the day successful. They are productive, hardworking, and have enormous stamina.
In daily life: They create to-do lists and feel deep satisfaction checking items off. They're often the first to arrive and the last to leave.
Coaching tip: Make sure your drive doesn't become an end in itself. Consciously define which tasks truly matter – doing the right things, not just many things, makes the difference.
2. Arranger®
Arrangers are masters of complexity. They can juggle many variables simultaneously and intuitively find the best configuration of resources and people. When plans change, they adapt instantly.
In daily life: They spontaneously organize team events, coordinate multi-stakeholder projects, and love it when everything clicks into place.
Coaching tip: Use your talent consciously in complex projects. Be careful not to constantly reorganize – sometimes a plan needs stability too.
3. Belief®
People with Belief have firm core values that give their life direction and meaning. They are motivated by a deeper mission and want their work to make a difference.
In daily life: They commit to projects aligned with their values and decline tasks that contradict them. Their reliability makes them valued team members.
Coaching tip: Make your core values explicit. When your work aligns with them, you're nearly unstoppable. Communicate your values so others understand you better.
4. Consistency®
People with Consistency place the highest value on fairness and clear rules. They want everyone to be treated equally and processes to be transparent and predictable.
In daily life: They create guidelines, insist on equal standards, and are the voice of justice on the team.
Coaching tip: Your sense of justice is a strength – but remember that not every situation requires equal treatment. Sometimes individual solutions are needed.
5. Deliberative®
People with the Deliberative talent proceed with care. They anticipate risks, weigh options carefully, and make well-considered decisions. They're not obstacles – they're the team's safety net.
In daily life: They read the fine print, have a Plan B, and feel uncomfortable with hasty decisions.
Coaching tip: Your careful approach protects the team from costly mistakes. Make sure your thoroughness isn't perceived as hesitation – communicate your thinking process.
6. Discipline®
People with Discipline create order and structure in a chaotic world. They plan ahead, establish routines, and feel comfortable when everything has its place.
In daily life: Their calendar is color-coded, deadlines are never missed, and their work processes are thoughtful and efficient.
Coaching tip: Your love of structure is a gift – but allow yourself controlled flexibility. Not every situation requires a system.
7. Focus®
People with Focus can set a direction, follow it, and make necessary corrections. They instinctively prioritize and filter out the unimportant. Efficiency is their benchmark.
In daily life: They set clear goals, work with concentration, and become impatient with unnecessary meetings or distractions.
Coaching tip: Your focus makes you extremely effective – but don't forget to look up occasionally. Some opportunities lie outside your current tunnel.
8. Responsibility®
People with Responsibility take their commitments very seriously. When they say yes, they mean it. They feel emotionally bound to what they've promised and won't rest until it's done.
In daily life: They voluntarily take on responsibility, meet deadlines, and sincerely apologize when something goes wrong.
Coaching tip: Your reliability is worth its weight in gold – but learn to say no. Too many commitments can lead to burnout.
9. Restorative®
People with Restorative talent love solving problems. They analyze symptoms, identify the cause, and find a solution. The feeling of having "fixed" something gives them energy.
In daily life: They're the person called when something goes wrong – whether it's an IT issue, a team conflict, or a flawed process.
Coaching tip: Your problem-solving instinct is valuable – but also look for strengths, not just deficits. Not everything imperfect needs fixing.
---
Domain 2: Influencing
These eight talent themes help people persuade, inspire, and move others to action.
10. Activator®
People with the Activator talent make things happen by taking action. "When do we start?" is their favorite question. They know you learn more from doing than from endless planning.
In daily life: They start projects before all details are sorted out, bringing momentum to the team.
Coaching tip: Your action energy is contagious – but bring others along. Not everyone is ready to jump in immediately. A brief check-in before the sprint saves time later.
11. Command®
People with Command have presence. They don't shy away from confrontation and can make clear decisions in difficult situations. They take charge when necessary.
In daily life: They speak uncomfortable truths, lead crisis meetings, and make clear decisions even under pressure.
Coaching tip: Your assertiveness is indispensable in crises – but everyday situations sometimes need softer approaches. Questions instead of directives can engage your team more deeply.
12. Communication®
People with Communication are natural storytellers. They find the right words to bring ideas to life and can present complex topics in an engaging, understandable way.
In daily life: They deliver compelling presentations, write persuasive emails, and can turn the mood in meetings.
Coaching tip: Your gift is powerful – use it consciously. The best communicators listen as well as they speak. Ensure your words carry substance.
13. Competition®
People with Competition compare themselves to others and strive to be the best. Competition is their fuel – winning doesn't just feel good, it's essential.
In daily life: They track rankings, set measurable goals, and love comparing their performance against benchmarks.
Coaching tip: Your competitive spirit drives you to peak performance – but define "winning" more broadly. Competing against yourself (personal bests) can be more sustainably motivating than always trying to beat others.
14. Self-Assurance®
People with Self-Assurance trust their own judgment. They have an inner compass that gives them confidence – regardless of external validation. This makes them calm in stormy times.
In daily life: They make decisions swiftly, stand by their convictions, and aren't easily unsettled.
Coaching tip: Your self-confidence is a superpower – but stay open to feedback. Inner security and willingness to learn are not contradictions.
15. Significance®
People with Significance want to make a lasting impression. They strive for recognition and want to be known for something important. Mediocrity is their greatest fear.
In daily life: They take on lighthouse projects, strive for visibility, and refuse to settle for average.
Coaching tip: Your striving for greatness can move mountains – channel it toward a goal bigger than yourself. True significance often comes through serving others.
16. Woo®
Woo stands for "Winning Others Over." People with this talent love meeting new people and winning their sympathy. Strangers are simply friends they haven't met yet.
In daily life: They effortlessly make contacts at events, break the ice in new groups, and have an endless network.
Coaching tip: Your social ease opens doors – but also develop depth in relationships. Many acquaintances are good, but a few genuine connections are better.
---
Domain 3: Relationship Building
These nine talent themes enable people to build strong relationships and hold teams together.
17. Adaptability®
People with Adaptability live in the here and now. They respond flexibly to changes and remain calm when plans are thrown out the window.
In daily life: They improvise confidently, take last-minute changes in stride, and help others cope with uncertainty.
Coaching tip: Your flexibility is indispensable in our fast-paced world – but also set long-term goals. Adaptability and direction complement each other perfectly.
18. Connectedness®
People with Connectedness believe everything is linked. They see the invisible threads between events, people, and the greater order of things.
In daily life: They recognize patterns where others see coincidence and give the team a sense of purpose and coherence.
Coaching tip: Your sense of the bigger picture inspires others – share your perspective. In times of uncertainty, your conviction that everything happens for a reason can be an anchor for your team.
19. Developer®
Developers see potential in other people. They recognize the smallest progress and celebrate it. Their greatest gift is believing in others' growth.
In daily life: They coach, mentor, and encourage others. They notice improvements others overlook and give targeted, encouraging feedback.
Coaching tip: Your ability to recognize potential is transformative – but invest in your own growth too. The best developer also needs someone who believes in them.
20. Empathy®
People with Empathy can intuitively sense others' feelings. They feel what others feel before a word is spoken. This makes them outstanding listeners and advisors.
In daily life: They immediately notice when something is "off" in the team, find the right words in difficult moments, and create safe spaces for open conversations.
Coaching tip: Your empathy is a gift – but protect yourself from emotional overload. Setting boundaries isn't coldness, it's self-care.
21. Harmony®
People with Harmony seek consensus and agreement. They see little gain in conflict and try to find common ground on which everyone can build.
In daily life: They mediate disagreements, seek pragmatic compromises, and ensure a pleasant working atmosphere.
Coaching tip: Your bridge-building ability is valuable – but don't avoid addressing important conflicts. Constructive friction can foster innovation.
22. Includer®
Includers ensure no one is left out. They widen the circle, invite others in, and make sure every voice is heard.
In daily life: They invite the new colleague to lunch, draw quieter team members into discussions, and pay attention to diversity.
Coaching tip: Your inclusivity strengthens teams – but also respect that some people need space. Inclusion means inviting, not pushing.
23. Individualization®
People with Individualization are fascinated by each person's unique qualities. They recognize that everyone works differently and instinctively know how to bring different people together.
In daily life: They staff teams optimally, adapt their communication style to each person, and give individually meaningful gifts.
Coaching tip: Your people knowledge is extraordinary – use it actively in team building and leadership. You are a natural coach.
24. Positivity®
People with Positivity are contagiously optimistic. They see the good in people and situations and can sweep others up in their enthusiasm.
In daily life: They celebrate successes, lift spirits during tough phases, and always find something positive – even in setbacks.
Coaching tip: Your energy lifts teams to a new level – but take negative emotions seriously too. Toxic positivity can make others feel unheard.
25. Relator®
People with the Relator talent value deep, authentic relationships. They prefer a few close friendships over many superficial contacts. Trust is their currency.
In daily life: They have a small, close circle of friends, invest significant time in existing relationships, and share personal things only with trusted people.
Coaching tip: Your depth makes relationships resilient – but occasionally open up to new people too. Every deep relationship once started as a superficial one.
---
Domain 4: Strategic Thinking
These eight talent themes help people absorb information, analyze it, and keep the team on course.
26. Analytical®
Analytical people demand evidence. They search for patterns and connections in data and won't accept claims without proof. They bring objectivity and clarity to discussions.
In daily life: They ask the uncomfortable "Why?" questions, analyze data thoroughly, and expose logical weaknesses in arguments.
Coaching tip: Your analytical sharpness is a shield against poor decisions – but not everything in life can be quantified. Sometimes trust your intuition too.
27. Context®
People with Context look back to understand the present. They explore history to recognize patterns and make better decisions for the future.
In daily life: They ask "How did we get here?", study company history, and learn from past mistakes and successes.
Coaching tip: Your historical understanding gives decisions depth – but don't let the past become a brake. History informs, but it doesn't dictate the future.
28. Futuristic®
People with the Futuristic talent are fascinated by the future. They see detailed pictures of what could be and inspire others with their vision.
In daily life: They design strategies, paint big pictures, and excite teams about long-term goals. "Imagine..." is their favorite phrase.
Coaching tip: Your vision gives teams direction – but connect your future images with concrete next steps. A vision without an implementation plan remains a dream.
29. Ideation®
People with Ideation are fascinated by ideas. They find connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena and love the creative "aha moment."
In daily life: They brainstorm passionately, question the status quo, and bring fresh perspectives to stuck discussions.
Coaching tip: Your creativity is an engine for innovation – but prioritize. Not every brilliant idea needs immediate implementation. Keep an "idea journal" and select the best ones.
30. Input®
People with the Input talent have an insatiable thirst for knowledge. They collect information, facts, quotes, books – anything that might be useful someday.
In daily life: They have bookmark folders with hundreds of links, recommend books on every topic, and are the team's walking encyclopedia.
Coaching tip: Your knowledge treasure is impressive – but share it actively. Collected knowledge only unfolds its value when shared and applied.
31. Intellection®
People with Intellection love to think. They enjoy intellectual activity, pondering, and reflecting. They need "thinking time" and come with deep questions rather than quick answers.
In daily life: They retreat to think, engage in profound conversations, and often return with thoughtful insights that surprise others.
Coaching tip: Your depth of reflection is rare and valuable – but don't forget to share your thoughts. The best ideas are useless if they stay in your head.
32. Learner®
People with the Learner talent love the process of learning. Not necessarily the outcome, but the journey from not-knowing to mastery excites them. They are lifelong learners.
In daily life: They attend courses, read constantly, ask questions, and thrive when they can dive into a new subject.
Coaching tip: Your love of learning keeps you relevant and growth-oriented – but also apply what you learn. Learning without application can become procrastination.
33. Strategic®
People with the Strategic talent see patterns where others see only complexity. They play through different scenarios and find the best path through chaos – like a chess player thinking several moves ahead.
In daily life: They quickly identify the most efficient path to a goal, ask "What if?" questions, and are unbeatable in planning.
Coaching tip: Your strategic thinking is an enormous advantage – but explain your thought process to others. What's obvious to you can be a puzzle for others.

How CliftonStrengths® Is Used in Coaching
At PurposeCoach®, we use CliftonStrengths® as a central element of our coaching work. The process begins with the assessment, followed by a comprehensive debriefing conversation where we analyze your top talents together and place them in the context of your life.
The goal isn't to fix your weaknesses, but to maximize your strengths. Gallup research shows: people who use their strengths daily are 6x more engaged at work and report 3x higher quality of life.
In coaching, we work on three levels:
1. Creating awareness: Understanding your Top 5 talents and recognizing how they show up in your daily life.
2. Developing strengths: Talent × Investment (Knowledge + Practice) = Strength. We develop concrete strategies for how to deploy and develop your talents intentionally.
3. Managing blind spots: Understanding your "basement themes" (rank 30–34) and learning how to manage them – through partnerships, systems, or conscious compensation.
CliftonStrengths® Combined with Other Assessments
In the PurposeCoach® approach, we combine CliftonStrengths® with Profilingvalues and the Enneagram for a holistic picture:
• CliftonStrengths® reveals your *How* – your natural behavioral patterns and thinking styles.
• Profilingvalues reveals your *What* – your values orientation and decision-making quality.
• Enneagram reveals your *Why* – your deepest motivations and fears.
This combination enables coaching that doesn't just scratch the surface but achieves real, lasting transformation.
