Enneagram Coaching: Understand the 9 types and live them in daily life
The Enneagram is more than a personality test. It is a deep map of your inner drivers, recurring patterns and potential. At PurposeCoach®, we treat it as a reflection and development model that we combine with CliftonStrengths®, Profilingvalues and Purpose Coaching. This page explains how Enneagram coaching works, what the nine types mean and how you translate that knowledge into concrete behavior change.

What to expect
1. What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram describes nine personality types that differ in core motivation, fear and growth path. It is a development tool, not a label.
2. Test vs. coaching
The test gives a first hint of your type. Coaching interprets the result, clears distortions and shows how your type influences you in concrete situations.
3. The 9 types at a glance
Reformer, Helper, Achiever, Individualist, Investigator, Loyalist, Enthusiast, Challenger and Peacemaker – each type carries unique strengths and growth areas.
4. Coaching process
First call → type verification → 3–5 sessions of 60–90 min. → growth plan. Focus: self-awareness, communication, leadership and relationships.
5. Coaching vs. test
A test shows a tendency. Coaching brings clarity about wings, stress lines, subtypes and your personal growth path.
6. Integration with purpose
Enneagram coaching shows how your type blocks or supports your calling. Combined with CliftonStrengths® and Profilingvalues, it creates a holistic strengths and meaning profile.
How it works
1. Free 30-min consultation
We clarify your situation, explain the difference between test and coaching and check whether Enneagram coaching is right for you.
2. Type verification
Together we verify your Enneagram type, including wings, stress lines and subtype. The test is only the starting point.
3. 3–5 coaching sessions
We work on your typical patterns in leadership, communication, relationships and stress. Each session lasts 60–90 minutes.
4. Growth plan & integration
You leave coaching with concrete exercises, trigger cards and a plan for how to consciously use your type in daily life.
Who is this for?
- You have taken the Enneagram test and wonder: "What does this mean for me now?"
- You want to understand your inner drivers, stress patterns and communication styles.
- You are a leader or team manager looking for more self-leadership and better relationships.
- You want to connect Enneagram with purpose, strengths and values in a holistic coaching process.
„The Enneagram test was interesting, but coaching was the first thing that really showed me why I keep switching to assertiveness in conflicts. Today I notice earlier when my Type 8 takes over and can consciously dial back."

Enneagram coaching in detail: types, wings and growth
The Enneagram is an ancient system that has blossomed anew in modern psychology and coaching practice. It describes nine basic personality types that differ in their central motivation, life strategy and deep fear. Unlike many tests, the Enneagram does not measure behavior but the 'why' behind it. That is why it is so valuable for coaching, leadership and personal development.
Important: We do not treat the Enneagram as 'the truth about your personality'. It is an empirically informed reflection and development model with a strong track record in coaching practice. At PurposeCoach®, we therefore do not use it in isolation, but combine it with established methods such as CliftonStrengths®, Profilingvalues and Purpose Coaching. The result is a balanced, evidence-based picture – not a single label, but a nuanced development perspective.
The nine types are divided into three centers: gut (1, 8, 9), heart (2, 3, 4) and head (5, 6, 7). Gut-center types are about control, justice and harmony. Heart types revolve around relationship, recognition and authenticity. Head types seek security, knowledge and new possibilities. These centers explain where your first reaction comes from – whether you tend to act, feel or think.
Each type has two wings, neighboring types that color its expression. A Type 4 with a 3 wing feels different from a Type 4 with a 5 wing. Then there are stress lines (integration and disintegration lines), showing how we react under stress or in growth. A Type 6 may look like a Type 3 under stress and like a Type 9 in growth. These nuances are precisely what coaching verifies and clarifies.
Enneagram coaching is therefore more than an interpretation. It is a process in which you learn to recognize your automatic programs. Where do you overreact? Where do you lose energy? Where do you sabotage yourself? And most importantly: what is your way out? Each type has a specific growth path that is worked out step by step in coaching.
In practice we often combine the Enneagram with CliftonStrengths® and Profilingvalues. The Enneagram explains the motivation behind your strengths, CliftonStrengths® shows which talents you naturally use and Profilingvalues shows which values guide you. Together they form a holistic picture of strengths, values, meaning and personality – the foundation for real purpose coaching.
A typical coaching process includes 3–5 sessions of 60–90 minutes, plus a free 30-minute first call. Sessions take place online or in Bern/Wabern. Cost: single session 200–350 CHF, packages (4–6 sessions) 1,200–2,800 CHF. Combinations with CliftonStrengths® and Profilingvalues are available as special purpose packages – we can clarify details in the first call.

Big Five has the strongest psychometric evidence but says little about motivation. The Enneagram is strong for development but less validated. That is why we combine instruments instead of relying on one.
