Coaching, life coaching, purpose coaching – definitions in detail
According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching is a partnering, thought-provoking and creative process that inspires clients to maximize their personal and professional potential. The coach doesn't prescribe solutions – they ask questions, listen actively and create a protected space for reflection. Coaching is always voluntary, time-limited and works with healthy, capable people on a clearly defined topic.
Life coaching focuses on private life: relationships, life stages, transitions, the search for meaning. Business coaching addresses professional themes: leadership, career decisions, conflicts, performance. Career coaching is a subset focused on professional reorientation. Executive coaching is business coaching for top management. Team coaching works with whole groups instead of individuals.
Purpose Coaching is a modern synthesis: it uses the tools of life and business coaching but combines them with validated diagnostics (Gallup CliftonStrengths®, profilingvalues) and the central question of meaning. The goal isn't a new job – it's a sustainable "why": the intersection of your strengths, your values and what the world needs from you.
Therapy distinction: Psychotherapy treats psychological distress (depression, anxiety, trauma) based on a diagnosis. Coaching doesn't work with diagnoses but with goals. If you're acutely suffering, seek therapy first – coaching complements but doesn't replace it. Mentoring distinction: Mentors share advice from their own industry experience; coaches deliberately don't give advice but help you find your own answers.
Process in practice: After the free 30-min call comes the assessment, then 4–6 sessions over 2–4 months. Methods like the GROW model (Goal–Reality–Options–Will) structure each session. Values and strengths work provide the content. Vision board and meaning quadrant consolidate the result. Sessions last 75–90 minutes and take place online or in Bern/Wabern.
Pricing in Switzerland: A serious single session costs 200–350 CHF. Full purpose packages (assessment plus 4–6 sessions) range from 1,200 to 2,800 CHF. Health insurance does not reimburse coaching – it's not a medical service. Look for transparent pricing before every booking and a recognized coach certification (e.g. Certified Purpose Coach®, ICF, Gallup).
