    Context

    Gain clarity and start acting

A clear life vision does not answer every question in life. But it can provide orientation when decisions get difficult, priorities compete or the next step is unclear.

These reflection exercises combine the coaching practice of PurposeCoach® and Philipp Fuchs with established psychological approaches to purpose, goal setting and self-reflection.

The aim is to turn general wishes into a personally coherent direction – and that direction into concrete next steps.

Why a life vision can help

Psychological research studies the concept of „purpose in life“ – the experience of direction, goal orientation and personal meaning. McKnight and Kashdan describe purpose as a process that defines life goals and creates personal meaning. Pursuing and reaching personally relevant goals can be a source of engagement and meaning.

A systematic review and meta-analysis by Czekierda et al., covering 66 studies with a total of 73,546 participants, found positive associations between meaning in life and physical health. Overall the associations were weak to moderate. These are correlations: they do not show that a life vision causes better health.

The goal-setting research by Edwin Locke and Gary Latham summarises roughly 35 years of empirical research. A key finding: under suitable conditions, specific and challenging goals often lead to better performance than the vague instruction to simply do your best.

In practice this means: a life vision is not a promise of success. But it can provide a frame of reference for reviewing decisions, goals and priorities.

Definitions: life vision, goal and transfer plan

    What is a life vision?

A life vision is a personal picture of the future describing how you want to live, act and contribute.

It connects values, strengths, desired areas of life and long-term goals into one overarching direction – which makes it more than a single goal.

A goal answers: „What do I want to achieve?“ A life vision goes further: „How do I want to live – and who do I want to be while doing it?“

It does not need to define every detail. Its value lies in guiding today's decisions.

Do I know my direction well enough to choose my next step consciously?

    What is a transfer plan?

A transfer plan translates insights and goals into concrete everyday actions.

It defines which next steps are taken, when and how – and how they are reflected on afterwards. It bridges recognising, deciding, acting, reflecting and anchoring.

A life vision without transfer can remain a nice idea.

What do I concretely do differently because I know my direction?

How do vision, goal and transfer differ?

The vision sets the direction, the goal describes a concrete desired state, and the transfer plan brings both into daily life.

This distinction matters because a life vision should not stop at general statements such as „I want to be happy and successful“.

    More concrete questions help:

    • What does a good life mean to me?
    • Which values should be visible in it?
    • Which of my strengths do I want to use more often?
    • How do I want to work – and how do I want to use my time?
    • What contribution do I want to make?
    • What do I want to be able to say about today's life in five or ten years?

Which of these ideas can I make visible within the next seven days through one small action?

    Coaching practice

    From coaching practice

Two anonymised observations from coaching practice. They illustrate how the exercises are used – they are not statistical proof of effectiveness.

Example 1: Professionally successful – but without clear direction

    Starting point
A client was professionally successful and had several development options. His problem was not a lack of options, but the opposite: which option really fits me?
    Application
In the reflection work, career options were not judged only by status, income or career prospects, but by three questions:
    • Which option fits my most important values?
    • Where can I use my strengths meaningfully?
    • Which decision brings me closer to the life I want?
    Change
The life vision became a personal decision filter. Not every attractive option had to be pursued. The client could prioritise more clearly and define one concrete next step.

Insight: A life vision does not make decisions for us. But it can provide the criteria we decide by.

Example 2: „I know what I no longer want.“

    Starting point
A client could clearly name what she wanted to change: less stress, less external control and fewer tasks that drained her energy. Asked „What do you want instead?“, she initially had no clear answer.
    Application
Instead of setting new goals immediately, she reflected on different areas of life and formulated a picture of the future:
    • How do I want to work?
    • How do I want to shape my relationships?
    • Which values should guide my everyday life?
    • What do I want to spend more time on?
    Change
No major life overhaul was derived from the vision. Instead, she defined one small step that could be implemented within the next seven days.

Insight: A life vision does not have to change everything at once. It becomes effective when orientation turns into concrete decisions.

From picture of the future to a 7-day transfer

Choose one single aspect of your life vision. Not ten. Not your whole life. One. Then ask: what would be a concrete step I can take within seven days?

Example – Vision: „I want to nurture my most important relationships more consciously.“ · Goal: „I want to spend more time with people who matter to me.“ · Transfer: „I block two hours on Thursday evening for dinner together – in my calendar, today.“

Also use your life vision as a decision filter: Does this decision fit my values? Can I use my key strengths in it? Does it bring me closer to the life I want to live?

So the decisive question is not:

„Have I planned my entire life?“

„Do I know my direction well enough to choose my next step consciously?“

Frequently asked questions about a life vision

    Your next step

Write one sentence about your current life vision, name the most important area you want to change – and define the concrete step you will take within the next seven days.

This is how an abstract idea becomes an observable action.

„What do I concretely do differently because I know my direction?“
